The latest 'Waza of the Week' has been posted to the USJA web site.
Today’s Waza of the Week is presented by Igor Kourinoy, Merited Master of Sport, thrice World Sambo Champion, Russian International Judo representative and Head Coach of Club Boretz, Moscow. As with our previous series, the maneuvers presented by Igor work from the situation of first breaking the opponent’s grip.
Igor presents today’s waza as a follow-on maneuver from our previous Waza of the Week Near Leg Knock Down.
The Corner Roll versus Hands and Knees has recently been seen in various international events. When using a Corner Roll versus Hands and Knees the attacker simply places a lever, in this case his rear leg, and levers the defender, cross-body, to the far Corner.
There are two points of which you should be aware.
1) A Corner Roll versus Hands and Knees, or as I like to call it the Turtle, works because the defender has forfeited his/her mobility for a false sense of security in a defensive posture. Hands and Knees is not all that strong! Hands and Knees is certainly not strong enough to protect from an opponent who knows the secret to attacking “the turtle”.
2) The secret to defeating the turtle is space. Against the turtle you need only enough space into which you can insinuate a small lever. In today’s example the defender stays high and allows Igor ready space into which he inserts his rear leg. In the real world of competition your opponent probably isn’t going to offer such opportunity. You want to create space against the turtle? Scrub your opponent! Scrubbing is an action of exerting a sharp tug on the defenders belt while pressing his/her head toward the mat; the head goes down, the butt comes up and space is created. From there, insert your lever and roll!
PERFORMANCE GOAL:
Lock the Inside Arm to Your Chest!!!
By locking the inside arm to your chest the attacker;
1. forces his/her weight onto the trapped arm
2. generates maximum influence over the defender’s mobility
Turn to your chest and push the FAR Corner!
Observe that Igor turns to his own chest as he rolls the defender. By turning to his chest he moves the defender at an angle and avoids carrying the defender’s full weight. In essence, Igor hooks his lever, spins under the defender’s chest and pushes into the Far Corner.
